The Spitfires rode an early three-goal lead to a 7-3 win over the Greyhounds before a crowd of 3,895 at the WFCU Centre.

The victory was Windsor’s fifth in six meetings against the Greyhounds this season and pulled the Spitfires to within one point of Sault Ste. Marie for second place in the West Division. Windsor still holds four games in hand on Sault Ste. Marie.

The Spitfires also pulled to within six points of the first-place Flint Firebirds, who lost 5-3 in Erie, with Windsor holding four games in hand on the division leader.

On Saturday, defenceman Louka Henault’s power-play goal had Windsor on the board less than a minute into the game and rookie Ryan Abraham and Josh Currie pushed the Spitfires’ lead to 3-0 after 20 minutes and chased Sault Ste. Marie starting goalie Tucker Tynan.

Windsor penalty problems allowed the Greyhounds to get back into the game in the second period. Cole MacKay sandwiched a pair of power-play goals around a short-handed goal by the Spitfires’ Pasquale Zito. Bryce McConnell-Barker, with Sault Ste. Marie’s only even-strength tally of the game, made it a one-goal game after 40 minutes.

Windsor got a solid game from goalie Matt Onuska, who finished with 36 saves as the Spitfires were outshot 39-25 overall, which was partly due to Windsor having to kill nine Sault Ste. Marie power plays.

Abraham’s second of the game gave the Spitfires some breathing room midway through the third period and rookie Ethan Miedema and Wyatt Johnston, with an empty-net, short-handed goal, closed the scoring.
