‘Sister Act 3’ is still on the way, with Whoopi Goldberg ready to put butts in those seats

It’s been a great week for ‘Sister Act’ fans – what with the Bord Gais Energy Theatre production kicking off in Dublin this week AND Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis and Tyler Perry chatting further about the planned sequel film.

Hallelujah! ‘Sister Act 3’ is still very much on the horizon, with Whoopi Goldberg still up for appearing as nun-on-the-run Dolores AKA Sister Mary Clarence.

The forthcoming Disney+ sequel film, which will follow both of the 1992 and 1993 cinematic releases, has been gathering steam this week thanks to the US daytime talk show ‘The View’. Goldberg, who is a regular panellist on the chat show, had two guests this week who dropped some information about the sequel.

Comedian and actor Tyler Perry is a producer on the project, which has been 20 years in the making, and said he wished the comedy could move along at a quicker pace: “I love the idea of us making this happen but you know, the Hollywood system moves a little slower than I’d like to.

“So we’ve got a good script. We’re off to a great start. We’re just trying to get everybody moving in the right direction so we can get it going.”

Goldberg said Disney execs thought “nobody wanted to see it” but when Perry said “I want to see it,” they listened.

Earlier in the week, the incredibly talented Broadway star and actor Jenifer Lewis also chatted briefly with Goldberg about ‘Sister Act 3′ on the show; she originally appeared in the first film as one of Dolores’ backup singers at the beginning of the film.

Whoopi Goldberg said she’d love to work with her once again: “You know we’re still going to do that movie. And I’d do everything I can to work with her because she’s fun.”

Lewis also revealed it was her who encouraged Goldberg to sing in the film” “They were going to use my voice and I told Whoopi, ‘Look, you just get in this mirror with the two of us [her and Charlotte Crossley, who played Tina], and you just get a hairbrush and pretend that we’re 15 years old singing Gladys Knight and the Pips.’

“And Whoopi did it, she sang her little booty off.”

Watch ‘Sister Act’ and ‘Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit’ on Disney+. Catch the musical version of the show at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin, which is running until October 1.
