Vancouver police are now asking anyone who recognizes the person from security footage to contact investigators.

“This was a violent crime that occurred on one of the busiest shopping nights of the year and affected many people,” Sgt. Steve Addison said of the Dec. 3 incident at Pacific Centre. “We’re asking everyone to look hard at this video and call us if you know the person responsible.”

On Dec. 3 around 6 p.m., a masked person walked into the Dunsmuir Street luxury retailer and set off a cloud of bear spray, before walking over to a display, picking up a $1,800 purse and leaving the store.

The person then headed east on Dunsmuir toward Seymour Street

Addison said dozens of shoppers were hit by the bear spray, which can cause skin irritation, temporary blindness and respiratory issues.

“The entire store had to be evacuated because it was so hard to breathe.”

Investigators have not been able to identify the person.

The person, captured in store security footage, is believed to be in their 20s, was wearing a yellow face mask, a green hoodie and a black cup with white logo at the time of the incident.

Anyone who recognizes the person or has information about the incident is asked to contact Vancouver Police at 604-717-4022 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, if they wish to remain anonymous.
