Frenkie de Jong’s father on Barcelona future and chances of Man United move

Frenkie de Jong’s father speaks out over Barcelona future and chances of Man United switch

The father of Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong has, on Monday, provided an insight into his son’s future at the club.

Torres amongst targets

The subject of incomings and outgoings alike has of course proven a major topic of conversation when it comes to matters at the Camp Nou of late.

This comes as the latest instillation on the Blaugrana’s bench, club legend Xavi, sets about building a squad capable of reestablishing itself at the top of not only Spanish, but European football as a whole.

In turn, a whole host of high-profile stars, particularly in the attacking third, have been tipped to make the move to the Catalan capital during the January transfer window.

The most persistent links have surrounded Manchester City standout Ferran Torres, a player whom club president Joan Laporta has already confirmed has indeed emerged as a winter target:

‘He [Torres] is one of the players we have in our sights, but there are many others. You have to wait and see how everything goes,’ the Barcelona chief explained to TV3.

‘Don’t see it happening’

When it comes to potential departures from Catalunya, meanwhile, the likes of Ousmane Dembele, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Sergino Dest have all been named as possible avenues towards raising much-needed funds.

If the latest comments surrounding the future of another transfer-linked member of Xavi’s ranks are anything to go by, however, then he, at least, will be going nowhere any time soon.

The player in question? Frenkie de Jong.

Speaking in an interview with outlet AD in his home country of the Netherlands on Monday, John de Jong, Frenkie’s father, was drawn on his son’s future at the Camp Nou.

This comes amid surprise suggestions in the media that the midfielder, on the back of a less than impressive opening to the campaign, could be made available for transfer.

His father, however, this evening moved to pour cold water on such rumours, assuring that, despite ‘the 5 best European clubs’ having made contact over his services, it is altogether unlikely that Barcelona would actually be coaxed into a sale.

Interestingly, the Dutchman also appeared to rule out both Manchester United and Bayern Munich as potential future destinations, too, citing the ‘horrible weather’ as the determining factor:

‘Bayern or United? The weather is horrible there … I know that Barça need the money and a great offer for Frenkie could help, but I don’t see that happening. However… the 5 best European clubs have called for him.’
