COVID-19: B.C. workplaces no longer required to allow for remote work

B.C. workplaces are no longer required to accommodate remote work options for employees due to COVID-19.

On Thursday, health officials updated a public safety order for workplaces to remove a paragraph that previously outlined the requirement for employers to “allow workers to work from their private residence, if possible, given the nature of the work involved.”

The only exception was for work that had to be conducted in the workplace.

Employers are still required to have COVID safety plans in place and masks are still mandatory in indoor spaces.

“The province and the PHO recognize that every workplace is different. Many workplaces will be able to transition to in-person work again quickly,” read a statement issued by the province. “Others may wish to continue with remote or hybrid models. Workplaces and businesses are encouraged to choose the option that works best for them.”

In the fall, some work places had begun easing into a return to the workplace. In early January, workplaces were again required to reactivate their COVID safety plans in response to the latest wave of Omicron transmission.

Thursday’s update comes following a widespread easing of restrictions on social gatherings. All restrictions on personal gatherings have been lifted, while capacity limits and bans on dancing and mingling have been removed for restaurants, clubs, weddings and other organized indoor events.
