Conversations That Matter: Cutting ship CO2 emissions

According to the European Commission, international shipping is a large and growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.

The EU estimates “maritime transport emits around 940 million tonnes of CO2 annually and is responsible for about 2.5 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions are projected to rise significantly if mitigation measures are not put in place swiftly.”

Enter a Vancouver innovator and battery developer, Brent Perry, who has been on the leading edge of marine battery development for more than 25 years. He has developed and is putting into service a pay-as-you-go electrification service, based on swappable batteries that give shipping customers clean energy.

“Shipping’s retail customers around the world, like Amazon and others, want to decarbonize the industry now,” Perry said. “Corporations such as Ikea, Amazon and Unilever have all signed the coZEV pledge, which commits them to decarbonize the industry by 2040. The International Maritime Organization wants shipping to do the same, with the goal of a full 40 per cent reduction by the end of this decade.”

Perry, of Shift Clean Energy, joined a Conversation that Matters about his batteries as a service model and how it will play a significant role in shifting shipping from black energy to clean energy.
