Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has warned Chelsea to be wary regarding the motives of their potential new owner as trio face uncertain future with club now up for sale
Jamie Carragher has warned Chelsea to learn from Liverpool’s ownership issues in the wake of Roman Abramovich’s decision to sell the club.
Liverpool endured a difficult period under the ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett, before they eventually sold the club after an underwhelming three-and-a-half year tenure to FSG.
The impending sale of Chelsea also means that Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta face uncertain futures with the club.
All three players are out of contract this summer and with on-going ownership issues Chelsea may not be in a position to offer them new deals.
Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante revealed that he and the rest of his team-mate’s were not ‘prepared’ for the announcement that the club in now up for sale.
Here are Mirror Football’s latest Chelsea headlines.
Carragher warning to Chelsea
Jamie Carragher harked back to Liverpool’s past ownership nightmare in a stern warning to Chelsea as Roman Abramovich prepares to offload the club.
Abramovich announced he is selling the Blues on Wednesday, 19 years on from when he bought the club in a move which would change the face of the Premier League.
An American-Swiss consortium headed by billionaire Hansjorg Wyss is understood to be in pole position to take Chelsea off the Russian oligarch’s hands.
Carragher insists finding “the right buyer” is of paramount importance if the West Londoners are to avoid the fate Liverpool endured under Tom Hicks and George Gillett Jr.
Question marks over trio’s future
Chelsea trio Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta face an uncertain future in west London, with Roman Abramovich’s sale of the club raising questions over any potential new deals.
Abramovich has announced plans to sell the club after nearly 20 years as owner, though an opening offer has reportedly been knocked back with the Russian’s advisor suggesting there is no “rush” to sell.
There has also been uncertainty over the future of Marina Granovskaia, the director who has been at the forefront of much of Chelsea’s transfer and contract business over the last decade.
Rudiger, Christensen and Azpilicueta are all out of contract at the end of the coming season, with negotiations having taken place over the past few months, albeit with no new terms agreed.
Kante on Abramovich’s announcement
N’Golo Kante admits the Chelsea dressing room were “not prepared” when Roman Abramovich announced his intention to sell the club, but is keeping his focus on footballing matters.
The Russian billionaire stated on Tuesday that he was looking to offload the west London outfit.
It will bring the curtain down on his near two-decade ownership of the Stamford Bridge club and brings with it a sense of uncertainty.
On the pitch Abramovich’s millions have made Chelsea a global force with Kante enjoying huge success since his move in 2016.
