Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta turned down five offers for fringe player in January, including Premier League interest

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta turned down five offers for fringe player in January, including Premier League interest

Arsenal rejected a whopping 5 approaches for midfielder Mohamed Elneny in January, according to a source close to the player.

Speaking to SportWitness, the Egyptian’s agent revealed that the midfielder was keen to leave before his contract expired in the summer, but that Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was not so keen on the idea.

Elneny was away with Egypt for much of January, as he helped his side reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations before falling on penalties to Senegal.

In fact, it was this tournament that probably played a part in Elneny’s need to stay, with Thomas Partey also at the tournament and, at some stages, Sambi Lokonga was the only senior midfielder Arsenal could call upon after they let Ainsley Maitland-Niles leave to Roma on loan.

What was said?

Speaking to local Egyptian radio, in quotes recorded by Sports Witness, Elneny’s agent Alan Nazmy revealed that offers from Turkey, England, France and Spain were all turned down by Arsenal, with the fringe player staying put.

‘The player’s contract expires at the end of the current season, and Arteta rejected all offers that came for Elneny and asked that him to stay with the team’, he claimed.

‘Newcastle United, Valencia, Lyon, and the largest known Turkish clubs, Galatasaray and Fenerbahce, wanted to sign Elneny, but in the end Arteta and the Arsenal management refused’, the agent added.

With just 17 games left of Arsenal’s season after they were knocked out of both the FA and Carabao Cups in January, Elneny may continue to be a substitute option for Mikel Arteta. Nevertheless, he was too valuable to let go.
